SCOPE NOTES: These 16 negatives were reproduced from original photographs owned and copyrighted by The Quad City Times and Rock Island Argus/Dispatch. Photographs reproductions from these negatives were used in the exhibit Baby Boomers: A Nostalgia Trip, October 24, 1997- May 31, 1998. The original photographs were returned and the negatives retained for future possible use.

Bartels Collection 1996-165
Date: 1903-1957
Scope Notes: This collection is associated with a large donation of furniture and household items by Marge Bartels. Photographs are of her family members who are associated with the artifacts in the other donations (1998-7, 1996-176, 1997-5).
Erwin and Nelle Mangels were the donor’s uncle and aunt. He was an active antique collector and collected much of the furniture donated by Ms. Bartels and through her estate. They lived at 2925 Grand Avenue. Marie (Harms) Mangels was Erwin’s mother. Donor’s mother was Margaret Mangels. After her first husband (Bartels??) died, she married William Weiser. Family’s name was originally Von Halle. It was changed during World War I because of anti-German sentiment.
Family information from Marie Mangels’ obit: Maria Mathilde Harms born Heide, Holstin, Germany on Nov. 5, 1860. She married August Heinrich Christian Mangels on Dec. 31, 1880. They moved to US in 1890 and lived in Kansas City until 1903. Children were: three daughters: Mrs. Ralph Barnhardt, Mrs. William Weiser, Mrs. Morris Bennett; 5 sons: August, Henry, Ed, John and Erwin Mangels; 11 grandchildren. Her sister was Mrs. Anna Moeller. Buried in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Scope Notes: This collection, donated by Violet Barton, documents Charles B. Barton, Jr.’s last day of work as a switchman on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Barton worked for the railroad for 40 years. See accession file for additional information.
The collection consists of 5 black and white copy negatives made from color Polaroid prints in the donor’s possession.

BAWDEN BROS. COLLECTION 1962-75
Inclusive dates: 1845-1941 (predominant dates: c. 1920-41)
SCOPE NOTES: This collection is comprised primarily of images taken by Bawden Brothers, Inc., Advertising Service, Illustrators, Engravers, and Printers of Davenport. The majority are original although some are copies apparently made for some specific purpose from another work. A wide range of subjects are included (see list of major sub-collections and subject headings below).
Cellulose nitrate negatives originally formed a large portion of this collection. These nitrate negatives and some safety negatives that had been damaged by their long term proximity to the nitrates (1962.75.38-97, 110, 112, 120-252, 254-420) were duplicated and prints made with the help of a state grant in May and June 1992 (see Box 1, folder 2 for information about grant and duplication process). The rest of the collection is comprised of safety negatives or prints. Prints exist for all images except safety negatives 1962.75.98-109, 111, 113, 119. Negatives exist for 1962.75.1, 2, 38-422
Images 1962.75.38-333 have been arranged according to the identification numbers written on them by the Bawdens themselves. The remainder were unnumbered. Remnants of existing original envelopes and photocopies of same are located in Box 1, folder 1.
Images 457-471 have been removed to oversize storage (Cabinet 1, Drawer 1, #3, 15, 18, 19).

Scope Notes: Small collection of 5 x 7 glass plate negatives of family members(?) enjoying family activities.
Collection included clothing & jewelry belonging to donor from c. 1900 to c.1940. Mrs. Bell was married to Dr. Leroy Bell, a veterinarian, owner of Bell Animal Hospital, Locust St., Davenport, Iowa. Mrs. Bell worked in his office for many years and also worked for the Area Education Agency. Born in Independence Missouri, she is the daughter of Roy Montgomery, who worked on the Arsenal; the family moved to Davenport when she was in elementary school. Mrs. Bell graduated from Davenport High School (DHS) in 1945.

Scope Notes:
The collection contains over 750 prints (most with matching negatives), 22 postcards, 105nitrate negatives and 7 glass negatives, which document over 300 riverboats on the Mississippi, Illinois, and Ohio Rivers. The collection also includes a ribbon from the Steamer Morning Star, and 2 booklets of steamboat names, information and lists.
The prints with matching negatives (1166) are mostly original images which date mainly from the 1930s. Prints do not exist for the nitrate negatives and negatives 86j, k, 110p, 116, 252 and 305af. Many of the nitrate negatives are copy negatives. However, numbers 203, 205, 223, 228, 248, 263, and 277 portray boats which are not otherwise represented in the Museum’s photograph collection.
Negatives (except nitrate) are stored in Box 1. Prints are in Boxes 2 & 3. Ribbon and booklets are in Box3. The nitrate negatives are currently stored in a bin, in the women’s restroom on the dock, pending funds to have copy prints made.

Scrapbook 2
Deals primarily with Springdale, Iowa, residents Edwin and Barclay Coppock and their relationship with John Brown. Both men were with Brown during his raid on Harper’s Ferry. Edwin was captured with Brown and hanged; his brother escaped. The scrapbook was compiled by Civil War veteran W.W. Hathaway and Ruth Irish Preston arranged the donation of the volume to the Davenport Academy of Sciences in 1915.
