Davenport Academy of Natural Sciences
NOTES ON THE PRODUCTION OF “PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ECLIPSE OF THE SUN AUGUST 7, 1869”
To produce a series of photographic images of an eclipse of the sun, the Davenport Academy of Natural Sciences purchased a telescope made by Thomas Lighton of Rock Island for $100. With the telescope, “twenty pretty fair photographs were made” of the eclipse of the sun on August 7, 1869. Davenport photographer P[aul] B. Jones served as the photographer for the event.
The Academy planned to sell five hundred sets of prints to other institutions in its first communication with the
scientific world. Unfortunately, financial disagreements between P. B. Jones and the Academy slowed the process [see copies of correspondence in file] and it is doubtful that anywhere near that number of sets was produced.
Other known copies include:
Davenport Public Library has a copy which contains six photographic prints of the eclipse. Photocopies of this
volume are in folder 1.
United States Naval Observatory, 34th and Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, 20392-5100, has a complete set containing all 20 photographic prints. This copy was “Presented to the U. S. Naval Observatory by the Academy of Nat’l Sciences, Davenport Iowa” [quote from first page of U. S. Naval Observatory volume]. Photocopies of this volume are in folder 2.
Ezra Mack, apparently a rare book or antique dealer from New York City, had a complete copy in October 1991. He contacted the Putnam Museum for further information about the set, which could not be supplied at that time.
