Fact vs Fiction & “Road to Perdition”
Film Screening & Discussion
A mob enforcer’s son in 1930s Illinois witnesses a murder, forcing him and his father to take to the road, and his father down a path of redemption and revenge. Nominated for six Academy Awards and winner of the Academy Award for Cinematography. Directed by Sam Mendes, “Road to Perdition” is based on a graphic novel, which is in turn based on the true story of 1920s Quad City gangster John Looney.
The movie re-teams Sam Mendes with Conrad L. Hall, the brilliant cinematographer responsible for that film’s surreal classicist shimmer. With ”Road to Perdition” they have created a truly majestic visual tone poem, one that is so much more stylized than its forerunner that it inspires a continuing and deeply satisfying awareness of the best movies as monumental ”picture shows.” – New York Times
For the first time, Max Allan Collins and Roger Ruthhart will share the stage for a riveting post-screening discussion and Q&A. Collins is the author of the graphic novel and Ruthhart is the co-author of “Citadel of Sin”, a non-fiction account of the John Looney gangster story. Find out what parts of the movie story are based on real events, and hear how one writer uncovered a stranger-than-fiction local true story and how the other adapted that true story into a Rock Island-to-Hollywood work of fiction.
