Research Procedures

All requests for research privileges and appointments must be made in advance so that the museum staff may make arrangements, assemble collections, and schedule curatorial time. No researcher should assume that they can have immediate access to the collections without a scheduled appointment. Researchers should complete a registration form in order to facilitate the process. Inquiries can be directed to any member of the curatorial staff.

While natural history specimens, cultural artifacts, photographs, documents, and books may all be made available to a researcher, the museum reserves the right to restrict research on any item in its collections and may, in some instances, require and check references before a researcher is given access to collections.

No food or beverages are allowed in research areas. Researchers may bring into research areas only those materials essential for research. Approved belongings may be subject to search by the staff before departure. Items not approved for use in research areas will be checked at the curatorial or archives offices.

Current museum members and students may use the museum’s research facilities without charge. All other researchers may be required to pay in advance a daily research fee that will cover both their admission to the museum and the time that the museum staff will spend assisting and supervising the researcher. Researchers may contact a curatorial staff member for the current daily research rate.

Museum staff may perform very limited research. Staff research will depend upon available staff time and scope of requested research. Contact a staff member for further information.

Researchers may request permission to photograph objects in the museum’s collections. Researchers and photographers may be required to sign a formal statement stipulating any pertinent restrictions on the use of such photographs and credit lines to be used for publication. The images from the Putnam Museum collection must be credited in any public presentation, published work, or exhibition as “Putnam Museum and Science Center, Davenport, Iowa.” Depending upon the type of use, images may require additional use fees.

Researcher Requests

RESEARCH POLICY

The Putnam Museum and Science Center is an educational and cultural organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and using cultural artifacts and natural history specimens for the benefit of the public it serves. As a part of that service, the museum makes its collections available to serious researchers and scholars to an extent that is practical and consistent with the goals and best interests of the museum.

Researchers may use the collections of the Putnam Museum provided that they have a stated research goal with an educational, public, or genealogical purpose; can demonstrate an appreciation of the unique and delicate nature of the resources that they wish to research; and can conduct research in a responsible manner.

Additional information about research at the Putnam Museum and Science Center is listed on the back of the downloadable registration form. All researchers MUST complete the registration information, read the entire research policy, and sign the bottom of the back of this sheet BEFORE they are allowed access to the collections.

Putnam IMMERSE!

Hands-On Education Experience

We understand the importance of hands-on learning for school groups. That’s why we’re proud to offer Immerse, our immersive learning experience that has been a longtime favorite among educators and students alike. Immerse allows students to engage with exhibits in a unique and interactive way, enhancing their learning experience and making it more memorable.

Our dedicated staff works closely with educators to tailor the Immerse experience to the needs of each group, ensuring that every student gets the most out of their visit. We offer a variety of programs and activities that cover a wide range of subjects, from science and technology to history and culture.

Hands-On Learning Makes an Impact

Imagine if you took a fifth grade classroom and literally “immersed” it into the Putnam for one week. The teacher and students would have access to all the tools, resources and exhibits the Putnam has to offer, supporting a unique lesson plan for the week.

Imagine no more, because that’s exactly what the Putnam Education Department did with IMMERSE!

IMMERSE is in the midst of its third full year, and is making a difference. For example, 95% of teachers report it increased the impact of their teaching.

Bridging the “Learning Gap”

Pie graph illustrating how low income students have a 6,000 hour learning gap. Hours lost, 220 hours Family Reading Time, 245 hours Weekend Day Trips, 1,395 hours Pre-School, 1,080 hours Summer Camp and 3,060 hours After-School Activities.

DID YOU KNOW: Children living in low-income settings receive 6,000 fewer enrichment hours than children from well-resourced households by the time they reach sixth grade. This puts young people at a disadvantage — leading to a lifetime of lost opportunities.

A Drive to Achieve

IMMERSE provides mostly low-income students (at least 80% from Title I schools), as well as teachers, with unique, extended opportunities to delve deeply into their coursework with the Putnam’s resources infused into their regular curriculum as they attended school here for a week.

During IMMERSE’s 2017 pilot, five Davenport Community School District classrooms (Grade 5) and three East Moline School District classrooms (Grades 3 and 4) studied at the Putnam thanks to funds from The Hubbell-Waterman Foundation.

This year, IMMERSE is set to host 30 classes of students from the Davenport, East Moline and Rock Island-Milan school districts.

Sponsor An Immerse Class

You can sponsor an educational experience of a lifetime. Contact Cindy Diehl Yang at 563-336-7310 or cdiehlyang@putnam.org.

Education for Kids

Learning Beyond the Classroom!

Keep your child learning and engaged outside of school hours with Education for Kids at the Putnam Museum and Science Center. Whether they’re interested in music around the world, chemistry experiments, or building better bridges – there’s a program for them!

Preschool Education programs designed to spark curiosity and support early learning. With a mix of in-museum and outreach experiences, our programs encourage hands-on exploration, thoughtful use of technology, and student‑centered activities that engage young learners.

Explorers, Jr. Explorers & Kinder Explorers take place on Saturdays during the school year. Each workshop covers a different topic. Explorers is tailored for 4rd to 6th graders on the first Saturday of the month, Jr. Explorers is for 1st to 3rd graders on the second Saturday of the month and Kinder Explorers is for Pre-K to Kindergarteners on the third Saturday of the month.

Putnam Camps are set up during regular school breaks to help keep your child engaged and having fun! The camps are offered for full or half days to different age groups.

Chemistry for Kids occurs once a month, on a Saturday, during the school year. A professional chemist will lead an engaging workshop while your child preforms fun chemistry experiments!

The Fab Lab holds drop-in workshops where your child can explore things like technology, physics, and engineering through hands-on learning. From dash-and-drop robots to 3D pens, there’s something for everyone. The Fab Lab is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 12 pm, and Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30 to 5 pm.
