This is the Route of My Forefathers: Book Talk & Signing

Although the state of Iowa bears their name, the history of the Ioway people remains largely unknown to many Americans. In this compelling presentation, Dr. Green explores the story behind the 1837 Ioway Map, a unique document created by tribal leaders to record their history, document ancestral connections across the Midwest, and support their land claims during a period of immense change and displacement.

Drawing from oral traditions, historical records, and archaeological evidence, This Is the Route of My Forefathers reveals nearly 200 years of Ioway history and offers insight into the tribe’s diplomacy, relationships with neighboring nations, and strategies for navigating the challenges of dispossession. Through an interdisciplinary approach, Dr. Green brings new understanding to the enduring power of Indigenous knowledge, memory, and place.

Following the presentation, guests will have the opportunity to ask questions, meet the author, and have copies of the book signed.

About the Author

Dr. William Green has served as archaeologist at the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office, state archaeologist at the University of Iowa, and director of the Logan Museum of Anthropology and chair of the museum studies program at Beloit College. He currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
