Join us for an evening with historian and author Eric Steven Zimmer as he discusses his acclaimed book, Red Earth Nation: A History of Land, Sovereignty, and the Meskwaki People.

Through the story of the Meskwaki Nation, also known as the “Red Earth People,” Red Earth Nation explores one of the oldest and most powerful examples of Indigenous land reclamation in American history. Beginning with the Meskwaki Nation’s purchase of an eighty-acre parcel of land along the Iowa River in 1857, Zimmer traces a remarkable history of resilience, self-determination, and sovereignty that continues today through the modern #Landback movement.

Spanning centuries of Indigenous environmental, political, and cultural history, the book examines how the Meskwaki people have navigated tremendous challenges while rebuilding their homeland and asserting tribal sovereignty. Today, the Meskwaki Settlement encompasses more than 8,000 acres of sovereign Meskwaki land and stands as a testament to generations of leadership, perseverance, and community strength.

Following the presentation, guests will have the opportunity to ask questions, meet the author, and have copies of Red Earth Nation signed.

About the Author
Eric Steven Zimmer holds a PhD from the University of Iowa and completed Red Earth Nation as the A. B. Hammond Visiting Assistant Professor of Western United States History at the University of Montana, where he remains a faculty affiliate. His work focuses on Indigenous history, land reclamation, sovereignty, and the American West.
