Join Dr. Jane Simonsen, Professor of History and Gender Studies at Augustana College, for an insightful exploration of the images that have shaped our understanding of Black Hawk. While many Quad Citians recognize his likeness from signs, monuments, and local landmarks, few know the story behind the portraits that created this enduring image.
Through an examination of Black Hawk’s portraits from the 1830s, Dr. Simonsen will explore how clothing, appearance, and even the act of sitting for a portrait reveal complex stories about identity, culture, and power. Discover what these images can teach us about Black Hawk, the Sauk people, and evolving American attitudes toward Native peoples during a period of profound change. By looking beyond the portrait itself, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the social and political world in which Black Hawk lived and how his image continues to influence perceptions today.
