Scope Notes
This collection is comprised of 208 photographs primarily of the Fairchild, Brown
and Salter Families taken from the young adult years of A.W. Brown to the death of Gertrude Brown. The majority are original and local. Approximately one–third are taken from Des Moines, Milwaukee, and Tucson. Includes portraits, vacation, holidays, homes (exterior and interior), and family activities.

Chester Salter Sr. (Born 1903, died _____. Born in New Prague, Minnesota. Moved to Davenport, IA in 1911 due to his father’s, Stanley, transferred management position from the New Prague Flour Milling Co. to the International Mill Co. Graduated form the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN in Dec. 1925. Editor of the Minnesota Daily (newspaper) after graduating. Married Margeret Brown (aka “Peg”, “Sunny”). Helped to establish the Affiliated Wood Carvers, Inc., P.O.Box 406, Davenport, IA 52805. non–profit organization established in 1980–volunteered to direct in 1981–82, currently , in 1992, the organization has two divisions: (1)International Decoy Cont. and (2) International Woodcarvers Congress

born in Vermont; married Wilhelmina (?); graduated from Rush Medical College, Chicago, IL; “farmed–out” or interned with Dr. Mayo, Farmington, MN (Dr. Mayo’s sons founded the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, MN); his first son was born (Dr. David Stergus Fairchild Jr.); taught at Iowa State College, Ames, IA at their medical school which went by the wayside as the University of Iowa’s medical school kept ahead (traveled to Ames by horse and buggy with his then one year old son and his wife); took a job as the head of the Medical Dept. for a railroad company…had an operation in Clinton, IA. This was the motivation for moving to Clinton, IA; est. own practice in Clinton, IA and worked for the railroad; his two daughters were born in Clinton (Gertrude and Margeret); editor of the Iowa a Medical Journal for 30 years; had 10,000 volume library (which he built an addition for) and an extensive medical reference library (donated to Univ. of Iowa)…the library of general books was donated to Iowa Historical Society?; often used by area lawyers as an expert witness in medical cases; children: David S. born in Farmington, MN (c. 1875–85); died in automobile accident returning home from Davenport, IA; in Virginia they came upon freezing rain. Their car was in a horrible accident killing Mrs. Fairchild immediately however, the doctors kept Dr. Fairchild alive for one month; chief surgeon of the Rainbow Division in World War II; served in the Spanish American War, National Guard, Mexican War and WWI; retired to New Haven, Conn.; career military person (medical corp. ––Army division)..obtained rank of general maybe brigadier; one son who is retired from military service and is currently vacationing in Europe.

Additional information from Chester Salter relating to
1992-123, from a May 19, 1993 interview.
* Chester’s son, David, was born April 15, 1934 and died August 5, 1958.
* Robert Brown Sr.’s occupation was mainly real estate. He owned a hotel in Brainard, MN for a number of years. It was mainly a summer vacation hotel. In the winters, when it was slow, he and his wife would live in Tucson, AZ. There they purchased various properties which they rented out. Fifteen years before retiring to Tucson, AZ they purchased a resort in Alexandria, MN (photo in collection).
* Chester’s mothers name is Emma (Peters) Salter. Born in Chaska, MN, 1879 and died August 8, 1979.
* Chester’s career began with some difficulty. He wanted to attend the University of Minnesota (beginning Winter quarter 1921), however his high school in Davenport did not end until after the university quarter started. Through special arrangements with his principal he was able to earn enough credits to graduate early. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota on January 2, 1921. He began working toward a business major. At this particular time the U. of M. was having a fund raising project for a World War I war memorial. The memorial was the Veterans Stadium (which was torn down in 1990-92). He donated $200.00, payable in regular payments after college. He was able to convince a number of his friends to donate. His efforts would not go unnoticed.
One quarter before graduation it was realized that Chester needed to take 5, 3 credit courses…an ‘overload.’ He was able to take the ‘overload’ through special permission by the dean.
After his credit load was settled, the School of Business dean called and offered him a job of cleaning up the outstanding debts from the fund raising project. At first Chester refused due to his credit load. The dean said to give him one day to work out an idea. It was arranged that Chester could cut 3 of his 5 courses in exchange for handling the project. This was agreeable.
Chester was able to ‘limp in and limp out’ by January 1925.
During school he was the editor of the Minnesota Daily, the U. of M. school newspaper.
Upon returning to Davenport he began looking for a job relating to underwriting…a special interest he acquired in college.
He began work with Priester, Quail and Cundy, Inc. H. S. Priester, President. J. J. Quail, Vice-President and secretary. R. G. Gundy, Vice-President and treasurer. Investment Bankers located at 300-303 First National Bank Building, Davenport, IA 52803.
In 1926, he went to work. One year in the office (underwriting) and then selling. Most of the work was related with power and light companies.
At this point in time electrical lighting inside homes began taking hold. The Central State Power and Light, a utility holding company. Electricity went from city to county provision, then taken over by private investments. The single investments multiplied. (This area of information was sketchy at best)
After 6 months working in the office, Chester spoke with Henry Priester about selling. His first route took him to West Branch (used the freight train due to the dirt roads being impassible). Sold $25,000 off list (quite good), called back to the office to see next stop, he was told to go to Cedar Rapids. He kept going back to Cedar Rapids in the following years. Cedar Rapids became the headquarters for light and power companies. Eventually, the travel back and forth prompted Chester to move his family to Cedar Rapids in 1935 leaving Priester, Quail and Cundy for the Merchants National Bank (by 1935 all of his children were born). A considerable amount of refinancing of subsid. company of light and power companies was occurring…an ideal situation for Chester as an
underwriter.
His work brought him into contact with Albert Andrius (sp). He had a feed business in Lester, IA. He was trying to get farmers to plant soybeans then he would process them. Chester recognized the rational in this and they ‘hooked together right off the bat.’
The McMillian family in Indiana was actually processing soybeans at this time, however it was very inefficient. But due to WWII the McMillian family was able to get the German technology for a solvent plant in exchange for cotton which the Germans needed. It was done in this manner due to the embargo with German–only trade was allowed. The solvent plant went up in Fort Wayne, In. The solvent plant sliced the soybean instead of pressing it, thus recovering more oil. The oil was in demand due to the war (WWII). The troops were sent the main body of nutritional resources, thus an alternate nutrition product was needed for the public. Soybean flour and oil was the answer. Soybean by-products were proven to replace the nutritional value of meats proteins.
Due to the need for an alternative nutrition source the soybean flour production was encouraged by the U.S. government. Even with the new solvent plants the estimated processing of 50 tons per day was not possible. The soybean needed to be dehaul to obtain a loss of .02 % verses .18 %. Dehauling exposed the center where the oil is located.
In 1941, Chester went to work for the McMillian Flour Mill.
Chester found a company in Canada which developed and utilized a dehualing method. He obtained the copyrights, sent it to the McMillian plant. With this new technology it was possible to achieve 100 tons a day of processed flour.
To sell the public on the idea of using soybean flour Chester developed the idea of hosting backyard receptions (412 Rushome, Davenport, IA), serving foods made from soybean flour. He also developed a cookbook with others from McMillian. The flour was sold in 2 lb. bags.
At this point, Truman ordered the bombing of Japan and the war ended. The urgent need for soybean by-products as a nutritional resource diminished.
Today soybean flour is called ‘helper.’ A soybean by-product LECITHIN is commonly used in chocolate.
* Chester married Margeret Brown June 18, 1926. Divorced in 1957.
* Dr. David Stergus Fairchild Jr. established his career in the medical core of the army. Reached rank of cornel, maybe brigadier. Died in a car crash in VA during an ice storm. He actually survived the crash, but died a month later in the hospital. His wife was killed instantly. He had one son who followed his footsteps by establishing a medical career within the army.

This collection consists of six 4 x 5 copy negatives made from photographs and slides taken by and in the possession of donor Michael Schwenker. The copy negatives were made for use in the Weather Wonders exhibit, 1997. Mike Schwenker worked as the Museum’s Exhibit Technician.
Mr. Schwenker lived on the Oscar Schaeffer farm, 6000 Utica Ridge Road, during the 1970s. The farm has since been developed as Lake Hurst housing development.

This collection contains 13 digitally produced photographs on heavy bond (not photographic) paper. These images, along with the negatives in accession no. 1999-77, were solicited for possible inclusion in the exhibit “100 years of Real Stuff” and subsequently added to the collection.
The collection consisted of images related to the history of Sears Manufacturing Co., which began producing harnesses and saddles in 1855. By 1918, they also produced tents and “touring” items for automobiles and more recently produces seats for farm implements and trucks. See file for outline of company history. Images include factory interior and exterior, photos of products and portraits of the company leaders.

Scope Notes
This collection consists of 77 glass plate negatives of Davenport homes, views, buildings, churches, bridges, Fort Armstrong, and several of the first settlers of Davenport; also includes Indian chiefs of that era. The glass plates were made for Dr. Snider of the Davenport Centennial Committee by the Victor Animatograph Company in 1936. Plates are arranged in two groups (each marked sequentially) and are stored with the glass plate negatives.

Scope Notes
This collection documents student life at St. Katherine’s School in Davenport. The photographs were taken and/or acquired by Hattie Soloman Levy, paternal grandmother of donor Gertrude Levy. Hattie Soloman attended St. Katherine’s School for 6-8 months sometime around 1900. She was from Cedar Rapids. The donor, her mother and 3 sisters also attended St. Katherine’s. Donor’s father is Mortimer S. Levy. [Thanksgiving menu is marked “99” and one photo is labeled June 1990, so Hattie may have attended in late 1899 through spring 1900.]

This collection consists of 1058 photographic images (580 prints and 442 negatives) most of which were taken by Mr. Richard K. Sunderbruch, a Davenport commercial photographer. Mr. Sunderbruch’s work documents many Quad City area businesses. His many aerial photographs illustrate the development of Davenport and Bettendorf in the early 1960s. The Sunderbruch Collection 1960-59 represents numerous donations of Mr. Sunderbruch’s work including museum accession numbers: 1960-259, 1962-130, 1965-202, 1966-168, 1969-35, 1970-9, 1970-26.
