Explore paradise in new oceania exhibit! Explore paradise in the ocean cultures exhibit opening Sunday at the Putnam Museum! Ocean Voyagers: People of the Pacific Islands delves into the cultures of those closely connected to the sea. Discover what life was like in the Pacific Islands – which includes several hundred different cultures – through ceremonial objects such as ancestor masks; weaponry such as spears and war clubs; and personal items such as dance costumes, jewelry and shell and stone currency. Created by Putnam Museum curators, this exhibit features rarely seen artifacts from the Museum’s Collection that were donated by the Catholic Diocese of Des Moines.
“We are excited to be able to share these artifacts that tell the story of the many island cultures,” said Christina Kastell, Putnam Museum curator of history and anthropology.
This exhibit is generously sponsored by Riverboat Development Authority. It will be on exhibit in the Main Gallery February 28, through May 23.
