Digital Conversion Q & A:

Why did the Putnam decide to convert to digital?

4K digital technology is the most current technology available, and it allows us a much greater choice of programming opportunities.

What does 4K mean?

4K is a technical description for the number of lines of resolution in the image. Basically the bigger the number the better the image quality will be. With our Giant Screen being much larger than traditional movie theaters the new 4K technology is the first to have the quality to match our screen.

Will the Putnam still have a Giant Screen?

Yes, our screen will continue to be the biggest screen in the Quad Cities area.

Will this change the picture quality?

Our new 4K projection system is state of the art technology that is the best match for our Giant Screen. The picture quality will be just as the directors intended with intensely vibrant colors. In fact, experts agree that 4K projection matches or exceeds film picture quality.

What about the sound system?

Our sound system is being enhanced with THX® Certified sound by QSC Audio Products, LLC for a truly immersive movie experience.

Are there more programming options available by converting to digital?

We will continue to show documentaries and feature length films, and we’ll be adding programming such as independent films, live simulcasts, and Toon Time. Please stay tuned to our website to learn about more offerings as they become available.

Why did the Putnam leave the IMAX® brand?

Our 10-year contract with IMAX® expired in March 2012. At this time, they do not offer the most current technology, so we made the decision not to renew with them. We also want to be able to expand what we are able to offer the public.

What does Giant Screen Certified mean?

This is a designation offered by the Giant Screen Cinema Association to differentiate Giant Screen theaters that provide a premium, immersive movie experience. It means our screen is at least 70 feet wide or 3,100 square feet, and that we place all seating within one screen width of the screen itself.
