• #GivingTuesday

    Date: November 28, 2017

    Time: All day!

    Location:

Did you know that children living in low-income settings receive 6,000 fewer enrichment hours – reading time, after-school programs, hands-on learning and more – per year? The result: students who have issues with falling behind, truancy and dropping out of school – leading to a lifetime of lost opportunities. That’s why the Putnam wants ALL children to have access to hands-on learning and enrichment experiences.

Make this holiday season one that positively impacts the life of a child. Donate to one of the Putnam’s hands-on learning campaigns. Help support a child’s learning at Putnam this #GivingTuesday, Nov. 28th!

#GivingTuesday is a global movement of holiday giving through donations, gifts or the power of your voice. Proceeds will help fund our Hands-On Learning Campaign. Giving starts NOW and runs through Nov. 28. LET’S DO THIS!

Please consider the following when making your generous donation:
$200 donation: With this amount, you can sponsor one child for a whole week of summer camp. Summer camps give kindergarteners through eighth graders the opportunity to experience hands-on learning and to spark their interest in science.
$100 donation: Create an unforgettable learning experience by bringing a Putnam educator into a local classroom. Through our outreach program, educators visit a local classroom to share artifacts, experiments and hands-on learning.
$50 donation: Pay for one child to attend one day of Engineering Camp. Engineering camp explores robotics, creates team building opportunities and explores careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
$25 donation: Support one fifth grade student for one day of our IMMERSE Program. Our IMMERSE program gives local students access to all of Putnam’s on-site resources – artifacts, hands-on science experiences, Giant Screen documentaries, history exhibits, MIT Fab Lab, Discovery Dome and more. IMMERSE makes the Putnam their classroom – immersing them in hands-on learning and enrichment!

    What is hands-on learning?
Hands-on learning makes the difference between an educational experience that will be remembered and one that will be forgotten. The Putnam opens up a world of imagination and exploration. Through interactive exhibits, hands-on play and the support of our talented education staff, children take ownership of their learning and develop and explore their own curiosities at the Putnam. This develops higher critical and creative thinking skills, which are essential to future success.

  • World Adventure Series: The Lure & Lore of Deserts

    Date: February 20, 2018

    Time: 2:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m.

Location: Putnam Museum & Science Center

The deserts of the world are not the same. Each is unique... with its own look, feel and past.  The one similarity they ALL have had however, is their attraction to humans. Countless men and women.... each for their own reasons...have been lured to Deserts throughout the centuries. The Deserts of Egypt, Israel and Jordan are where it’s said God first spoke to man...and filled with stories we hold sacred.  While the vast sands have done their part to obscure the sites, we will sift through the past and present and relive those stories. The wealth of American Deserts also speaks of those lured throughout the centuries and the stories they’ve left behind. The lore and legends of the little know sites are still to be explored. Through Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and America we immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and splendor of Deserts to discover the Lore that has been left behind.

    Date: March 27, 2018

    Time: 2:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m.

Location: Putnam Museum & Science Center

The Middle East is a land of hospitality, a place where people make strangers feel at home. At the same time, it’s also been witness to acts of unspeakable brutality between warring tribes throughout history. It’s a world of paradoxes, one that is explored in director Rick Ray’s new film “The Promised Land: Adventures In the Middle East.”

Genesis 15:18-21- On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates—  the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,  Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”

“The Promised Land” represents a travel documentary through several Middle Eastern countries including Israel, Jordan and Turkey, and it showcases the wonders of those lands while discussing their rich histories and cultures.

    Date: April 10, 2018

    Time: 2:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m.

Location: Putnam Museum & Science Center

A land with deep roots, anchored in the mysteries of the Lost Kingdoms of the Maya, “Guatemala: The Land of the Maya””  begins by exploring the achievements of the ancient Maya by visiting fabled places like El Mirador, Tikal and Yaxha.  It examines the historic tension between Mayan traditions and Spanish colonialism, using the religious pageantry of Antigua’s Easter Week celebration to provide a cinematic backdrop for the fascinating conversation.

It documents contemporary Mayan culture in Lake Atitlan where weavers spin cotton by hand and rely on the natural dyes and back strap looms to create world-class textiles.
